The challenge was to design a modestly sized extension onto a large secondary school building. Our response to the brief was to place a two-storey extension onto one of the main circulation routes, to facilitate future expansion and to create a proper pedestrian link to the main sports hall. The form of the building is simple and bold, with large, splayed windows set back into the façade to both scoop light into the classrooms, while also controlling shade and over-heating. Splashes of colour taken from Newton’s colour wheel mark the entrance and bring identity and vibrancy to the internal spaces.
